Sunday Afternoon’s Unlawful Pastime

A number of young men from the Sandhills (Great Houghton) district were summoned for playing at “Banker” on Sunday afternoon 26 July.

They were: Thomas Iverson, Labour, Joseph Storey, John Storey, William Robson, John Oldfield, John Walker, all trammers of Sandhills, and Thomas Johnson, trammer of Darfield.

PC Aspinall and Barnes spoke as to having the defendants under observation from 4.30 to 5 p.m. on the date named. They were all engaged in the game.

Joseph Storey called his wife, she said he was in the house all afternoon.

Two of the defendants denied the charge, but the Bench decided to compete in every instance. Iverson, John Storey, and Johnson were each fined 10 shillings in cars, and the rest £1 and costs.
