A Local Mining Veteran

Little Houghton mourned the loss last weekend of Mr. John Crawford, one of its oldest residents and a man greatly esteemed in the district. He was an old employee of Houghton Main Colliery, where he was an official for 47 years.  Owing to indifferent health, he retired about three years ago. His death occurred last Thursday at the age of 67.

He was born at Bebside, Northumberland, and moved to Little Houghton nearly fifty years ago.  He resided at 6, Ings Lane for the last 46 years.  He was one of the rescue party of the Cadeby disaster of 1912.  He was a member of the Foresters and of the Officials’ Institute at Little Houghton. He leaves a widow, five sons and two daughters.  His eldest son, John, is in Canada and another son, George, who joined the 10thRoyal Hussars and has been in India, returned home recently.

The funeral was at Darfield on Saturday, the Rev. H. Sigel officiating. The following overmen and deputies of Houghton Main were bearers: Messrs. G. Rich, G. Naylor, G. Beeden, R. Thompson, W. Keensmith, J. Beaumont, A. Maxfield, and W.  Roberts.
