South Yorkshire Collieries And Hull Trade

In consequence of the Hull dispute and the disorganised state of affairs at that port, the usual monthly return relating to the coal trade was not issued until yesterday afternoon, being 10 or 11 days late. Although the dockers’ dispute had not set in at the close of last month there is a falling off in the tonnage compared with last year, and it is to be feared this will have been further increased when the next return makes its appearance.

The total imports last month reached only 90,832 tons against 142,072 tons in March, 1892, or a decrease of 51,240 tons. During last quarter 386,384 tons were sent as compared with 463,152 tons last year, the decrease being 76,768 tons. Last month the quantity sent coastwise was 15,434 tons, or nearly 400 tons more than was sent in February. During the quarter the tonnage was 50,259 tons, of which about three-fifths was sent to London. The exports last month only reached 23,430, being a decrease of 2,647 compared with the corresponding month of last year. The quantity exported during three months of 1892 was 114,515 tons, compared with 92,810 tons in the quarter ended March last.

Last month’s exports show a falling off of nearly 1,700 tons when compared with February. The Denaby Main Colliery Company is once again first on the list. Monk Bretton ranks second, Carlton Main stands third, and New Sharlstone Colliery takes the fourth place. Thrybergh has declined to nearly 12,000 tons, Wharncliffe Silkstone 4,500 tons, Barrow 900, Fryston 1,400, Hemsworth 1,000, Manvers 1,500, and Kilnhurst 4,300 tons.

The following return shows the quantity sent last month and during the quarter compared with the corresponding periods of last year:—
