0bituary – Doctor Baxter
Mr. Doctor Baxter (74), a well-known resident and esteemed chorister in the Parish Church choir for over half a century died in the Beckett Hospital, Barnsley last week. Mr. Baxter served throughout the Great War, joining up at the age of 44. He gained the Military Medal and, the Meritorious Service Medal.
He worked for half a century at Houghton Main Colliery, and in recognition of his faithful services was allowed to live in one of the Company’s bungalows in Edderthorpe on his retirement two years ago. He leaves seven daughters and five sons, all of whom were present at the funeral at Darfield on Saturday. Members of the Home Guard carried the coffin, which was draped in the Union Jack. Sergt. H. Pearce and Sergt. Bailey of the Home Guard were also present. Choristers of the Parish Church formed a guard of honour at the church sates.
The choir sang “Let the Saints on Earth,” the Magnificat and the 23rd Psalm and at the graveside the hymn “How bright; these glorious spirits shine.” The Rector mentioned that Mr. Baxter sang in Low Valley Mission Church choir before he assisted at Darfield Parish Church for half a century. At the graveside Bugler Alec Leyland of Thurnscoe H.G. sounded the Last Post and Reveille.
