Cycling To Flying

Writes A/c. E. B. Horsman, of Great Houghton, “The first article that I turn to after receiving my weekly copy of ‘The South Yorkshire Times,’ is ‘Some South Yorkshiremen serving with H.M. Forces.’ The enclosed photograph is of a member of Goldthorpe Clarion Cycling Club, of which I used to be press secretary.”

A/c. Horsman continues: “An air cadet, under training as pilot observer, George Henry Dealtry (19), is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Dealtry, of 43. Wordy Place. Hemsworth. Before volunteering for the Royal Air Force he was a weigh clerk at Hemsworth Colliery and a keen A.R.P. worker. He quickly adapted himself to the change of circumstances, and his  letters home Indicate that he is enjoying Service life.

An old boy of Hemsworth Grammar School, he commenced his education at the West End School. He a popular member of Cudworth Air Training Corps and figured with distinction in the squadron’ football team. George was a cycling enthusiast and associated with Goldthorpe Clarion Cycling Club, where he made many friends.

His weekly copy of the ‘Times’ is eagerly looked forward to.”
