Airman Killed

A Great Houghton Loss

News reached the district on Sunday night that Bernard Horseman, son of Mrs. Horseman of 2, Church Terrace, Great Houghton, had been fatally injured. He was in the R.A.F.

The message was conveyed by the police, who had just received the news. Ironically enough, his mother received a letter from him on Monday morning, after hearing of his death, which he had posted on Saturday. It stated that he was very well and was going to see the “Merchant of Venice” at Shakespeare’s Theatre in Stratford. Horseman was working with mobile transport.

He joined the R.A.F. four years ago and was in London when the heavy bombing took place. A bomb fell on his bed, but luckily, he was not in it. He had recently taken special courses and also recently spent a few days in Wales with a friend, Eric Hocking, of Goldthorpe. He was an old boy of Houghton Church School and later worked for the County Council on road work.  Details as to how he met his death have not yet been received by his mother.
