Colliery Official and Public Worker
Mr. John Briggs, a well-known figure in Little Houghton, died after a brief illness at his residence in Middlecliffe Lane on Friday.
He was 72 years of age and was for 29 years manager at Houghton Main. He also took a great interest in public life, and was an overseer for the parish of Little Houghton. For many years he served on the Little Houghton Parish Council and up to the time of his death was a member of the District Education Sub-Committee.
He was always a popular figure in social life, was a member of the committee of the Officials Institute and a prominent member of the Darfield Conservative Club.
His death to much regretted in a district where his kind, sympathetic disposition won him great esteem among the public and his colleagues and workmen at Houghton Main.
