Disgraceful Row at Great Houghton.

Joe Boardman, miner, Great Houghton, was summoned for having assaulted Mary Ann Cowan, married woman, and a neighbour.

Following a disturbance on Miners Demonstration Day, the respective families quarrelled again on Tuesday, June 18th. and, according complainant, the defendant came to her as she was standing at her house door and, struck twice at her face, but she defended herself  with her arms, which were now bruised and marked in consequence.

A lodger the house said defendant came and “hit complainant on her own doorstopP’ (Laughter.)

The charge was denied, and several witnesses were called to say that defendant’s wife and complainant were struggling together and that defendant merely parted them.

The case was dismissed.

So Mrs. Cowan was charged with having used indecent and abusive language to Annie Boardman, wife the defendant in the previous case.

The language, which was glibly repeated by several witnesses, was of a most disgusting nature.

This case was also dismissed.
