Fancy Dress Competition

Headed by Wombwell Home Guard Band, a parade of the various services from Great Houghton district, followed by a children’s fancy dress parade, in which over 30 took part, walked from the Railway Bridge through the principal streets of Houghton on Saturday.

The effort was arranged in connection with Great Houghton War Effort Fund. A gala was held in Park Lane Field, lent by Mr. Calvert, and a large number of people assembled there. A sum of £8 was raised by the street collection, and with competitions and various side shows, over £16 was made in all.

On the field a first aid ambulance demonstration was given, with Mr. Irving Crossfleld in charge, and demonstrations of other services were supervised by Mr. W. Butterworth. Mr. and Mrs. J. Worthington, of Little Houghton judged the fancy dress competition. Messrs. W. Norfolk, J. Hackett. H. Thompson, P. Harwood and Mrs. W. L. Lawrence and members of the W.V.S. were in charge of the children’s sports.

Prize money for the fancy dress and sports in the form of 5s. and 2s. 6d. worth of I war savings stamps were paid to the following at the Welfare Hall on Monday: Shirley Bowden, Mary Huddart, Joyce Robinson, Jean Heworth, Leslie Gytte, Marion Harwood Derick Harwood, Eric Hopwood. Tony Nuttall, Jack Wood, Effie Atkins, Ethel Pinder, John Goldthorpe, Alan Clayton, Irene Short, Mary Taylor, Fred Scott, Brian Helliwell, Bernice Robinson, Gladys Helliwell, Sidney Mynett, Clarence Clarke, Jerre Sorrell, Brenda Inman, Alan Clayton.
