Football at Great Houghton.
Four Houghton teams are in various leagues, and, whilst various leagues and whilst some do not presume to any great chancesof capturing league trophies., others are just as anxious to prove that their confidence is well grounded, and all have entered the season in the right spirit—that of true sport and love of a good game.
The St. Michael’s Athletic Club are running two teams, the first playing in the senior division of the Barnsley Association League, the second with the Barnsley Sunday School League. On Saturday the first’ team opposed Birdwell at Great Houghton, and an evenly contested match resulting in a draw 1-1. C. Walker scored for the St. Michael’s Their next match is on Saturday when they meet Staincross St. John’s at Great Houghton, is the first round for the Beckett Hospital Cup.
The Great Houghton United Athletic Club at this season only entered one team for league football, but, with the consequent wider selection of players, are justifying their action:
on Saturday they took the field against Norton, at Darton, in the junior division of the Barnsley Association league, and pulled off a comfortable victory, the score being 2-0. H Brooks and F Moss were responsible for the score.
In the first round of the Beckett Hospital Cup the United Athletic oppose Monckton on the latter’s ground on Saturday next.
