Great Houghton Feast
The annual sacred concert at Great Houghton on behalf of the local hospitals took place on Sunday afternoon, in a field opposite the Old Hall Inn.
A procession of the Houghton Main and Dearne Valley miners Lodges was formed at Snape Hill, and headed by the Houghton Main colliery price band marched through the Millhouses and Middlecliff to Sandhills when the village friendly societies joined in.
At the field, the Rev Father Leteaux of Hemsworth, presided, and a musical programme was given by a choir of upwards of 100 voices, under the conductorship of Mr H Cope. A string band the company, and Mr A Lister presided at the organ.
The speakers included Mr H Easby (Barnsley), Mr John Dixon (financial secretary of the Yorkshire Minus Association), Mr WB Sharp, and others.
At night the band again paraded the streets, and a second service was held in the same field, councillor Mr W Swain presiding.
On Monday and Tuesday the Houghton Main Cricket Club’s annual sports took place. The Houghton Main brass band played for dancing each evening
