Mexborough and Swinton Times April 29, 1927
The palm for public service, so far as Great Houghton is concerned, must be awarded to Councillor John Potts, who devoted many years to the public weal.
Born 54 years ago at Gornal, in Staffordshire, he was brought to Yorkshire in use, and lived in the Normanton district.
30 years ago he came to Great Houghton, and almost immediately began to take an active interest in public affairs.
Elected to the Parish Council 25 years ago, he has been its chairman for the last 15 years, and at its last meeting the Parish Council voiced their appreciation and put him into office for another term.
He was elected to the Hemsworth Rural Council and Board of guardians 16 years old, and was for a period vice chairman of the Rural Council. This year the number of attendances he has made at Hemsworth constitutes a record for that Council stop out of a possible 241 meeting he has attended 240. That can be called effective representation, and the rights and interests of Great Houghton are zealously watched.
Councillor Potts has the courage of his convictions and is never afraid to express them.
