Mr. S. G. Shaw’s Appointment

Native of Great Houghton

Following the death on December 22nd of Mr. J. T. Collins, managing director at Dearne Valley Colliery, Mr. S. Granville Shaw, of The Beeches, Doncaster Road, Darfield, has been appointed to take sole charge of that undertaking.

Mr. Shaw has been acting in that capacity since Mr. Collins’ death, and the appointment was confirmed at a meeting of the board of directors on January 24th.

Family Mining Interests

Mr. Shaw was born at Great Houghton, a son of the late Mr. James Thomas Shaw who for 45 years was an official at Houghton Main Colliery. He has two brothers (Mr J.C.Shaw and Mr J.G.Shaw) while on the staff at Houghton Main and 1/3 (Mr S.N.Shaw), who is cashier at Dearne Valley Colliery stop

Mr Shaw joined the staff of the Dearne Valley Company 20 years ago and apart from service in the Great War – during which he held a commission as a pilot in the Royal Air Forced – to remain with the company throughout.

A 1922 he became assistant secretary under Mr Collins at chargeable sales and purchasing departments.

Mr Shaw is well-known in commercial and coal trade circles, being a member of the Yorkshire, Manchester and Hall coal Exchanges and a member of the executive board of the South Yorkshire Coal owners Association.

Is present appointment includes that of Secretary to the Dearne Valley Trust Ltd (the parent company)
