Presentation at Houghton Main

A tribute to long service as an employee at Houghton Main Colliery was paid to Mr. S. Goulding, (picture) Highfield, Darfield, by Houghton Main Surface workers, by the presentation of a Jacobean canteen of cutlery on Friday.
The ceremony took place at the Bridge Inn and was attended by a good number of fellow workmen.
Before his retirement a few weeks ago Mr. Goulding had worked for 43 years on the surface at Houghton Main. He had done practically every job connected with surface work and for the last few years was yard foreman.
Mr. W. Nicholson (Great Houghton) who presided, congratulated Mr. Goulding on his long and excellent service. Mr. Tom Pollard (Middlecliffe) made the presentation and said Mr. Goulding’s record was an object lesson and inspiration to fellow workmen. He had carried out his duties faithfully, and his straightforward and honest dealings had made him respected by officials and men. He wished him and Mrs. Goulding good health.
Mr. Goulding said it was a pleasure to receive such a handsome gift, but the spirit which prompted it he appreciated even more. During the whole of his working life, he had tried to do his duty to his fellows.
The following contributed items to a convivial programme: Mr. George Hardman (baritone) Stairfoot; Mr. H. Johnson (tenor), Mr. J. Finean (humorist), Mr. W. Harris (elocutionist), Mr. G. W. Pickering (tenor) and Mr. G. Hawcroft (pianist).
