Sailor Broadcaster

Mr. and Mrs. F. Smithyman, of Dearne Street, Great Houghton, were delighted to hear their son, Able Seaman Charles Smithyman, speaking from Cairo last Sunday. It was especially welcome as it had been rumoured recently that Charlie had been reported missing.

His father, who was working on munitions on Sunday was allowed a little time off to go and hear his son’s broadcast.

In his message, Charlie said, ” Remember me to all the old pals, and tell them to keep reading about them in the Mexborough Times.”

He joined the Navy three years ago.
