Sequel To A Houghton Threat

A curious charge of assault was investigated at Barnsley yesterday, when Arthur Slater, a Great Houghton dataller, was brought up for an offence upon John Hawker, also resident in the same neighbourhood.

Complainant, a middle-aged, somewhat diminutive individual, said they were drinking together last Saturday Evening, when defendant became obnoxious, and after threatening to throw complainant into neighbouring duck pond, picked him and threw him over a fence into a field, and went after him in order, complainant said, to carry out his threat.

He was prevented, however, so limited his attentions to kicking his “parcel” twice.

Defendant admitted the offence, saying that he threatened to drown Hawker because persisted in his nasty talk.”

He was fined 10s. and costs.
