Won Scholarship.
Mr. Wilfred Beevers Stansfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Stansfield, of Brampton Terrace, Great Houghton, has been awarded a West Riding County Coal Mining Scholarship, tenable for a four years degree course at Sheffield University.
Mr. Stansfleld is 18 and won a County Minor Scholarship to Wath Grammar School, where he matriculated.
For the last eighteen months he has been on the staff of the Houghton Main By-Products Works as an assistant chemist.
All his spare time has been spent in studying chemistry and fuel technology at Barnsley Mining and Technical College. Two of his sisters have won scholarships and are at Wath Grammar school.
He is believed to be the first student from Great Houghton to have passed through to a university career.
