Great Houghton – Died of Wounds
Private Walter Harwood (Y and L), eldest son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Harwood, of Edward Street, Sandhill, Great Houghton, was severely wounded by a shell bursting within a few yards of him and he succumbed almost instantaneously.
Very sympathetic letters, conveying the sad news, have been received from his comrades, Sydney Chance and Dan Wilson, who were near Harwood at the time he was hit, and say he suffered no pain whatever.
Harwood previously worked at the Houghton Main Colliery.
