Great Houghton Man, Injured at Barnburgh, Dies

The death roll in the Barnburgh Main Pit blast 17 days ago rose again yesterday by the death in Wharncliffe hospital, Sheffield of Charles Trevor Stott (32) of 20 School Street, Great Houghton. He had been employed at the colliery since he was 14.

The funeral of the first victim to die Derek Smith (20) of Melbourne Avenue, Bolton on Dearne took place this week.

Stott, one of five men transferred to Wharncliffe hospital from Montague Hospital, Mexborough, last Friday, was married and the father of three young children, Wendy (8), Peter (5) and 11-month-old Andrew.

His wife, former Miss Hargreaves, was Great Houghton entry for Victory Queen.

His small son, Peter, said a very nice recitation at the Great Houghton Methodist Church primary anniversary the Sunday after the Pit blast occurred, and was very sorry his father could not be present to hear him.

The four other miners transferred to Wharncliffe are: Richard Corbridge (30), Montrose Avenue, intake, Doncaster; Herbert Edwards (37), Brow View, Bolton on Dearne; Joseph Hill (55), Manor Rd, Swinton; and Herbert Fells (41) Taylor St, Thurnscoe.

Last night they were reported to be “still seriously ill”.

The five remaining men at Montagu Hospital, Mexborough, was stated last night to be “still maintaining progress.” The three men in Moorgate hospital, Rotherham, were “still remaining ill but they are improving,” and the foreman at Doncaster Royal Infirmary were:

Martin Quigley (Bolton), “ill”; and Ernest Downing (Bolton), Albert Staniforth (Kilnhurst) and John Hemsworth (Bolton), “comfortable.”

At Fullerton hospital, Denaby, John Scott (54) of wind Hill Crescent, Mexborough, was last night reported to be “quite comfortable.
