The Late Mr Thomas Coulthard of Darfield

Accidentally Killed at Houghton Main Colliery, October 7th 1916

Darfield Mechanic’s Terrible Fall

Thomas Coulthard (57), a mechanic of School Street, Darfield, was engaged along with Wilfred Sim, in repairing the guides in the Staple Pit shaft of the Houghton Main Colliery.

Coulthard was in the cage, and had been calling to Sim to alter its position, when suddenly the brake lever snapped, and the cage and Coulthard fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of about 160 yards.

Coulthard was dead when recovered.
