Death of Mr J.M. Gardner

The death of Mr Joseph Middleton Gardner, of Little Houghton, took place at Park View on Monday week.

By his death, the Houghton Main colliery company loses a first-class mining engineer. He was appointed to this position some 40 years ago, when the colliery was in its infancy, and the fine plant which exist today is largely his creation.

He began his training in Durham, under the South Hetton Coal Company. Mr Gardner gave his all life to colliery work.

He was held in high esteem by the directors, and workmen of the colliery, as was evidenced by the large number who made their last tribute at the funeral, which took place at Darfield on Thursday last.

He was 66 years of age. His remains were borne to the grave by old colliery workmen.

The Reverend I Perry and the Reverend Randolph Ainsworth the officiating clergyman
