Houghton Main Fatal Accident.

CharIie Ward (36), married, a surface worker, of 8, College Terrace, Darfield, slipped and fell when following his employment on the slag heap at Houghton Main Colliery on Wednesday.

He struck his head and died a few minutes later.

Mr Ward is the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ward of Low Valley. His father was a former chairman of the Darfield Urban Council.

Until five weeks ago he was employed with Messrs. Camplejohn, where he was engaged as a bus driver for many but because of the war and reductions of staff he became employed at the colliery.

An inquest will be held this morning at Darfield chapel and the funeral will take place at Darfield cemetery on Saturday afternoon, following a service at the Parish Church.
