John Potts
Fine Record

Next month Mr John Potts celebrates the completion of 21 years as chairman of the Great Houghton Parish Council, in addition to having served for 33 years as a member of that body.
On the last day of this month he will attain his 64th birthday.

Probably one of the best-known figures in the Dearne Valley, his life, since going to the Great Houghton district, nearly 40 years ago, has been one of public service. Probably he holds several records for long service. For 25 consecutive years he had been a member of the Hemsworth Rural Council, and was the first Labour man to be appointed chairman, when Labour had a majority some nine years ago.

As a member of the Osgoldcross Board of Guardians (formerly Hemsworth Board) he has served for a quarter of a century.

Since the formation of the Dearne Valley Water Body 1921, Mr Potts had been a prominent member, and is generally dafter than district education subcommittee. He also takes a keen interest in hospital work and is president of the Great Houghton penny in the pound voluntary hospital scheme, chairman of the Brearley isolation hospital committee, and for 30 years he has acted as chairman for the Great Houghton Hospital committee.

He always makes a point of fulfilling any duty which is required of him. His family of nine sons and daughters are all well known in the district.
