Leading Seaman Yates, D.S.M.
Mrs Yates, of 62 Gypsy Hill, Upper Wirwood, also received official notification of the death of her husband, leading Seaman Charles Yates (Royal Naval division) who died of wounds received in France on May 6.
He was a native of Great Houghton, and enlisted in the R.N.D. the first month of the war. He went to the Dardanelles with the Hawke battalion and in the fighting at Cape Helles on June 19, 1915, behaved in so gallant and courageous a manner in helping an officer to hold a trench that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
He was invalided home shortly afterwards, suffering from the effects of a blow on the head, and after recovering re-joined and went to France, where he was mortally wounded on May 6
