“War Baby” From Houghton

A war baby born in 1914 is Pte. Robert Jericho Hutchinson, son of Mrs. Atkinson and the late Mr. Hutchinson, of 38, Brampton Terrace. Great Houghton. The day he was born, his father, who was attached to the K.0.Y.L.I. in the last war, walked in on an unexpected leave. He saw his son a few months later when his wife took him to bid farewell to his father, who left Hull for France.

He never saw him again for the father was killed in July 1915 in the Battle of Mons.

Robert enlisted seven years ago, leaving Houghton Main Colliery at the age of 18. Four years ago he went out to India and had expected being home for good last Christmas. However the war has altered that.
