(York & Lancs)

Great Houghton – Killed in Action

Private Thomas Randerson (K.O.Y.L.I.), son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Randerson, of West view, School Street, great Houghton, enlisted in October 1914, and had served 11 months in France before being shot dead by a sniper on July 4.

Captain JW Taylor writes:

it is my painful duty as the officer at present commanding the Company in which private Randerson belonged to write and express my sympathy and that of his comrades with you at his death. He was killed on or about the 6th inst, in a gallant fight in which many of his comrades were also killed.

It was a very good soldier and his loss is mourned by all the survivors of the fight. I hope it may be a comfort to you to know that his death was practically instantaneous and painless.
