Native of Middlecliffe near Barnsley; Weighed only  5 st. when he left school. Played hi« early football with Dearne Valley Old Boys and Middlecliffe. Turned down after a trial with Barnsley. Snapped up by Leeds United, 1930. Cost Arsenal £7.500 four years later, English International v. Scotland, Wales., Ireland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and Belgium.
